David Bowie Is Exhibition at ACMI

The wait is over, the incredible David Bowie is exhibition has opened to pop culture fans at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).

The widely acclaimed exhibition, celebrating the phenomenal 50 year career of one of the most influential artists of our time arrives in Melbourne directly from London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), as part of the Victorian Government's Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series.

Already seen by 1 million people worldwide, David Bowie is has travelled from London to Chicago, Sao Paolo to Paris and Berlin since its premiere opening in 2013.  Now arriving in Australia for the first time, David Bowie is already caused a stir in Melbourne well before the official public opening on 16 July, 2015.

Drawing from Bowie's extraordinary career, the exhibition sees some 50 legendary costumes, original stage sets, handwritten lyric sheets, album artwork, rare film and photograph footage, which exploring the artist's wide-span influences as a musician, stage performer, writer and actor.

The beautifully curated exhibition includes more than 300 objects and films starting with Bowie's early years (Space Oddity - 1969) through to his musical and motion picture prime (Ziggy Stardust - 1972, Labyrinth- 1986).  Bowie's stage costumes including Ziggy Stardust bodysuits can be seen alongside his Union Jack coat designed by Bowie and the late Alexander McQueen for the Earthling album (1997).  Bowie's theatrical monochrome period in Berlin is recognised and celebrated, with a designated area displaying his Thin White Duke persona with a focus on the artist's experimental records produced in Germany between 1977 and 1979 (known as the Berlin Trilogy).

As well as commercial items recognised throughout David Bowie's incredible career, a selection of the artist's personal belongings make up part of David Bowie is. Never-before-seen storyboards, handwritten lyrics, sketches and diary entries seen in David Bowie is provide visitors with an exclusive insight into the evolution of an entertainment genius.

David Bowie is opens for a strictly limited season until 1 November 2015.  The exhibition opens Mon, Tues, Wed, Sat & Sun from 10am – 6pm, with admissions capped at 200 visitors per hour.  The ACMI season also includes a curated program of talks and special events, late night programs, film screenings and live performances associated with David Bowie's incredible career.
