Chain of Fools, a quaint little cafe on Beach Road in Mentone opened just three months ago, and is already attracting a wide range of patrons.
Admittedly, the reason my family and I ventured into Bayside's newest eatery, happened to be because of the images I'd seen online of its magnificent Bollywood-esque wall murals, decorated by Spanish-born airbrush artist 'Txiki'; and they are rather fabulous to see.

Although small-ish, Chain of Fools welcomes couples, small groups and families. There are outside tables should you wish to sit across the road from Port Phillip Bay's sea views, inside tables to seat groups, and a relaxed space to the rear of the cafe, where you will find the aforementioned artwork, plus a collection of upcycled hessian sack ottoman seats, alongside a retro TV cabinet with a working black and white television playing VHS classics.

As well as the aesthetics of the cafe's interior, Chain of Fools offers a menu that is far different from your usual fare; western dishes infused with decadent Indian flavours and spice. I can highly recommend the Fools smashed avo with feta, accompanied with a delicious green apple salad and fennel seeds, mung bean sprouts and a choice of grain or sourdough bread; by far the best smashed avocado dish I've eaten for breakfast. Other menu options include pulled pork baguettes, burgers (veggie burgers, also), BELT (like a BLT, but with egg), soups, stuffed omelettes, and the curry of the day.

For those that require a smaller refreshment, you will find a selection of baked goods; the chocolate brownies with fig are amazing to accompany your rather excellent coffee, tea or authentic chai. Being of a bit of a chai snob, I can vouch for the deliciousness of the Chain of Fools Bottomless Masala Chai, made with a house blend of spices, and served in glasses filled by an authentic vintage tea urn. For $5.50, you can refill your glass as many times as you wish, which is perfect to take the chill out of a cold Melburnian winter morning.

Chain of Fools staff are courteous and very welcoming, especially to those with young children, and the relaxed area to the back of the cafe make for an easy and pleasant family outing. There aren't too many eateries found along Beach Road, and certainly none that blend western food with Indian tastes as well as Chain of Fools.
