Royal Croquet Club

September 01, 2016

In true Melbourne style, Broadsheet has set up a bit of a foodie destination along Birrarung Marr.

What's a better excuse to hold this event than, "It's summer."

The Royal Croquet Club has been attracting Melburnians with popular eateries such as Miss Chu and Gelato Messina.

In fact Gelato Messina has been raising eyebrows with their servings of icecream in a can. I didn't try them myself but I've heard good things about the American Chow Down flavour: peanut gelato, Oreo custard, cream-cheese mousse and pretzel crunch.

Meanwhile the popular team behind Huxtaburger have started a new venture called Mr Claws serving lobster rolls. I had a spicy one, which wasn't spicy at all, but the roll itself was pretty tasty. The only problem wast it was a bit small for a $12 pricetag.

In the spirit of the summer barbecue atmosphere, my friends had some lamb chops from Meatmother, which one friend enjoyed but the other found plain.

I also enjoyed the servings from DOC, an Italian eatery that I hadn't tried yet. Their meatballs were hearty and delicious, and in true European style, included a generous amount of dipping bread.

Of course there are bars to help you cool down and relax in the Melbourne sun with Pimm's a popular beverage with the crowd.

And finally, you can also play croquet! However it feels like a small part of the whole event, the name and festival almost like an excuse to have food and drink by the river.

It's only on for a few more days, but they also have live music on Fridays. If you arrive early, you'll have no problem, but if you arrive on Friday/Saturday after 7pm expect a line because you need to pay $5 entry. This Friday's live music will be by Norman Jay MBE.

If you're not keen on missing out on the tennis - they'll also play it on the big screen, so don't worry!

If you're after some light fun in the sun with some food and drinks, the atmosphere and bustle is lovely. But as with many of these Melbourne events, expect some expensive price tags for small portions but quality food.
