5 ways to celebrate New Year's Eve in Melbourne

December 18, 2014

Australia's cultural capital is filled with a myraid of fun and exciting festivities to celebrate New Year's Eve.

Whether you prefer to be watching the City of Melbourne's fireworks light up the sky at midnight or you are one to dance the night away in a top night spot, Melbourne's summer climate means there are plenty of ways to celebrate New Year's Eve at both indoor and outdoor venues.

With so many events to choose from, we've narrowed it down to a selection of 5 ways to celebrate New Year's Eve in Melbourne:

1. City of Melbourne Firework Display

Melbourne may not match Sydney Harbour's picturesque New Year's Eve firework display lighting up the iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House, but Victoria's capital city still packs a sparkly punch with over several tonnes of fireworks brightening the darkness above the iconic skyline.

There are two sets of fireworks to witness; the family friendly 9.30pm show followed by the official midnight fireworks which will be broadcast live on Channel Seven.

There are plenty of public vantage points to witness Melbourne's firework display, with perhaps the most common spots positioned along the Yarra.  However, anywhere with a view of Melbourne's skyline will mean firework views are guaranteed.

2. Victoria Star River Cruise

All aboard the Victoria Star in Docklands for a memorable party cruise to end the year.  Experience the best of the city's fireworks in a 5 hour cruise offering gourmet canapés, champagne, and reasonable drink prices all night.

There will be DJ's spinning old retro tunes on the top deck, and all the latest dance tracks playing on the main deck with which strut your stuff.

Tickets for the strictly over 18 New Year's Eve Victoria Star River Cruise cost $150 per person.  Book your tickets here.

3. Rooftop Bar Party at Transit

Transit Rooftop Bar is situated in one of the best spots in the CBD, positioned on the top floor of the same building that houses the Transport Bar and Taxi Dining, on the corner of Flinders Street and Swanston Street, in Melbourne's iconic Federation Square. With expansive views across the city that stretch from the MCG to Southbank Promenade, Transit Rooftop proves to be a prime viewing spot for the city's fireworks.
