Supernormal ... Ah McConnell, you've done it again!

Adding to his mighty fleet of Melbourne restaurant offerings, Andrew McConnell’s Supernormal can be described as Golden Fields reborn and a permanent fixture for last summer’s pop-up Supernormal Canteen. McConnell has further cemented his dominance on the 'Paris end' of Flinders lane with Cumulus Inc and Cumulus Up located on the other side of Exhibition Street. You can’t miss the lustrous neon red cherry illuminating the entrance to Supernormal  on 180 Flinders Lane.


The Restaurant features old McConnell favourites such as the ever so delicious New England lobster roll (available for take away!) and the Peanut butter parfait, two must-eat menu items. The ‘raw bar’ menu items are a good starting point with Moonlight flat oysters as well as the raw tuna, ama ebi prawns and togarashi. The delicious inclusions of the roast chilli pork bao (or ‘pigs head bao’ as it is otherwise known), house kimchi, rice cakes and various dumplings add depth to the Asian-inspired menu. The menu even caters for more substantial sharing plates such as the twice-cooked duck bao and the pulled Korean BBQ pork shoulder. The fried custard with Ginger Syrup, for those who have already experienced the parfait, is fast becoming a contender for Supernormal’s signature dessert offering.

The drinks menu has something for everyone with an extensive list of sake for the more adventurous souls, an assortment of beer and wine and the ‘house made’ soda is a great option for most.  

With all the excitement that the menu offers, the stand out may just be the condiments and nibbles presented on the table upon arrival. Like myself, you may just find yourself intrigued by roasted seeds and looking for any acceptable reason to grind sesame from the mill.
